ROADWAY

Copyright 2014 – Robert E. Shandor

I'm a deer headlighted on a highway at night

Paralyzed with fear -- might be terminal fright --

I hear my poor heart beatin' like my momma's did

Back before the time that I became a kid

Wasn't long ago this seemed like paradise

I look around now it's not so nice

Traded trees for condos, grass for concrete,

Made our world a lot hotter and harder on our feet

Unlike the birds in the air or the fishes in the sea

I've lost the sense of place that seems right for me

Our society's rules are Kafkaesque

Our rank in the world mediocre at best

Lyin' and spyin' and corrupted down the line

Our government says what I paid for ain't mine

They're takin' from the needy, givin' more to those not,

Got a justice system with systemic rot

History is the roadway

That we can ride to a better day

Like Mandela and King
We
need to stand for what's right

Overcome our fears

And engage in the fight --

For change

"Officer Friendly"'s been replaced

By a milit'rized killer -- what a disgrace --

Our courts've sold out to the lowest bids

And now we like to jail our disturbed school kids

Corporations are reachin' across the big ponds to buy

Trade deals from the unisex demimondes

Who sit up on pedastaled government seats

Lookin' down on the masses they've fed to the streets

Let's change our ways while we have the time

Instead of livin' our lives like a pantomime

Throw away our smartphones, give up HBO,

Quit makin' war to help profits grow

Stop the macing of people for speakin' their minds

'Cause Amendment 1 is where our right's defined

Take the power back for people, let our anger be heard,

Remember government is intended to serve ... us

History is the roadway

That we can ride to a better day

Like Mandela and King

We need to stand for what's right

Overcome our fears

And engage in the fight --

For change
