LOVING OF A FRIEND

Copyright (c) 1974, 2013 – Robert E. Shandor

I want to speak of love to you

But I know you'd run away

And leave me standin' all alone

To face a wretched day

I want to touch your silken hair

Soft cheek and tender hand

And give to you my kisses sweet

My riches and my land

But the happiness that I dearly crave

To someone else belongs

And I would not think to interfere

For I know that would be wrong

But I doubt you'd understand me

For my words could not convey

All the feelings I hold here for you

Upon rising every day

With circumstances what they are

We'll pass like ships at sea

And sound farewell upon our horns

Then head off separately

Yes the happiness that I dearly crave

To someone else belongs

And I would not think to interfere

For I know that would be wrong

I won't reveal my love to you

Although it will grow without end

And I will content myself to give

The loving of a friend

The loving of a friend
